ZipCar Partnership at the Brixton Orchard

Our longstanding work at this south London landmark has been massively enriched thanks to our partnership with ZipCar. Their support has enabled us to target specific groups who could most benefit from the therapeutic potential of this wild oasis in the heart of Brixton.
In 2022-23 we hosted groups from Mosaic Clubhouse, Lambeth Early Action Partnership and the Baytree Centre, delivering bespoke workshop designed specially for their service users.
This is a perfect compliment to the weekly schedule of open-access volunteering sessions we run there thanks to the Brixton Business Improvement District.

Duration: Two years (ongoing)

Purpose: To enable hard to reach groups to make the most of the Brixton Orchard, and so to maximise its therapeutic and educational potential for local communities.

We ran several workshops for parents with the Lambeth Early Action Partnership, designing multi-sensory activities that can be repeated easily and cheaply in the home.
We made the most of the rare snow in south London, creating festive decorations from natural materials.
We also hosted our close neighbours from Mosaic Clubhouse, who learned some new skills helping us construct signs and wildlife habitats.
Participants learned about seed harvesting and circular garden principles in a multi-sensory way.
One of our favourite activities at the Orchard is just sitting in a circle and sharing ideas and feelings about life, nature and whatever else might arise.
Our facilitators designed activities to engage people of all ages using the seasonal resources available at the time.
More close neighbours, here from the Baytree Centre, braved the winter cold to make bird boxes and plant bulbs for spring.
We also hosted a big family volunteering day in the winter, with hot mulled apple juice served for a circle story time.
For many of the families, the enhanced space of the Orchard offers a uniquely wild and abundant green space within easy walking distance.
We use the creation of wildlife habitats to teach some skills that some people have never had the chance to learn.
