Lambeth Design — Lambeth Street Design Competition: Your Streets, Your Way

We ran a massive consultation exercise for Lambeth Council, engaging hundreds of residents, empowering them with the skills and resources they needed to submit inspiring designs to improve the spaces where they live, work and play.
There were 5 zones with 10 locations in total to be re-imagined. We produced design packs for each one of them, and also made paper copies available to ensure nobody suffered from digital exclusion, even in the second spring of the pandemic.

Summary

Year: 2021

Duration: 6 weeks

Purpose: To enable Lambeth residents to have a say in the redevelopment of their communal areas, in the wake of the pandemic, making them more beautiful, green, safe and inclusive.

With our friends at the Remakery, we designed and built colourful planters from reclaimed materials to advertise the competition in each location.
We were delighted that none of our installations were vandalised over their 6 weeks in situ.
Each planter display used QR codes to direct people to our multilingual online resources in the five most prevalent languages spoken in Lambeth.
We ran multimedia campaigns on social media to raise awareness.
Winning entries included significant landscaping projects, with design elements drawn by hand as well as in CAD.
Not all the sites involved landscaping. Some were murals, building on Brixton's rich history of culturally-relevant murals over many decades.
