This was a challenging, narrow space running between buildings of a local GP practice, making it quite dark. We were asked to transform it into a place that supported patient wellbeing and encouraged calm dwelling rather than just passing through. We wanted to add multi-sensory planting for year round interest, which can be tricky with such limited light.
Working with other project partners, we updated the original design and layout of the different elements in order to make the most of the limited sunlight in the courtyard. The advantage of the enclosure was that scent and sound from the garden were amplified. So we selected plants for scent, motion, colour and sound to provide year round stimuli for all the senses.
