Igloo Regeneration at Joseph Lancaster

One of our longest running projects, we’ve been working with the innovative team at Igloo Regeneration since 2019 on their plans for the Joseph Lancaster housing community in Southwark. We conducted long running community engagement and collaborative design activities to enthuse residents about the food growing and biodiversity measures in the design. We then installed the soft landscaping during the construction phase, including participatory planting sessions with residents. After completion, we maintained the ornamental zones and ran regular workshops for residents in their food growing spaces, training them up to take on autonomous management of the space.

Duration: long-running design consultancy, 3 week installation plus ongoing maintenance and engagement

Purpose: To maximise resident engagement with the outdoor spaces of a new housing development. To maximise the space’s benefits for humans and nature through design and engagement interventions.

The collaborative design process included a visit to a local school, where we asked the most important future residents for their vision of the site.
We worked with Igloo throughout the entire process over 3 years.
When it came time for planting, we invited residents to participate over multiple days.
We ran regular workshops to enable residents to grow food in their new raised beds, bringing in new plants as the seasons progressed.
We also installed and cared for several hundred square metres of low maintenance ornamental planting across the estate.
By the end of the first summer, residents' beds were overflowing with beautiful, tasty crops.
