How To Grow Ginger And Keep Pesky Pests Away!

Ginger is one of the most delicious spices on the earth. It is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain. It has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the common cold.

Ginger is also known to deter insects making them a great addition to your windowsill. Better yet, supermarket-bought ginger is easy to grow! Here is how you can grow ginger and keep pesky pests away.

  1. Choose your ginger root (technically called rhizomes) that is plump, free of wrinkles, with visible eyes which are the small points, sometimes with green bits on them at the end of the ginger’s fingers. The larger piece of ginger you choose, the faster the plant will grow.

  2. Cut the ginger into pieces ensuring each piece has eyes on it, if you would like to grow lots of ginger plants.

  3. Place the pieces, eyes pointing upwards, horizontally into individual pots filled with soil. If you don’t have any pots you can recycle old plastic milk bottles!

  4. Water lightly and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.  After a couple of weeks, there should be shoots growing.

  5. After a couple of months, you can either harvest new growth from the edges, or keep the plant as an ornamental feature.
