The opportunity arose thanks to a conversation with tenants at one of the communal gardens we maintain, Art4Space, who told us about the mosaic they were making for Hampton Court. We jumped at this unique chance to test our skills & collaborate with top people in the landscaping industry.
Brilliance in Bloom is a platform for craftspeople in small organisations to showcase their skills on a huge stage. Every element of the garden exhibits the talents of designers and makers, working on tight budgets, to make beautiful spaces for people to enjoy. The space demonstrates what can be achieved when people draw on their natural talents and unite to barter, borrow and re-use the resources to hand.
The planting is a riot of fun, using Helenium and Achillea in fiery colours, interspersed with striking Imperata ‘Red Baron’ for structural and visual texture. All the plants and materials will be re-used and distributed to maximise the garden’s positive impact and to minimise waste.
“Brilliance in Bloom is a tangible representation of good will, kindness & cooperation between different craftspeople, designers & volunteer groups. By collaborating, we will create a space that celebrates the joy of artistic self-expression in its many forms. Equal credit is due to every team member, landscaper, artist, volunteer & organisation that backed the project when it had appeared to me, the designer, to be doomed. In its simplest form, this garden is the culmination of a team’s dedication, enthusiasm & faith; it shows off their individual strengths through their art & skill.”
This project is only possible because of the amazing people involved, which at the time of writing include:
Dyofix – magical water colouring
Friends of Dorking – will re-home many of the plants in public spaces
Mears Group – donors of equipment and materials
Rolawn – soil & turf donors
