The longest day of the year approaches, and we have got activities to fill all those sunny hours across our sites from Brixton to Rotherhithe. The big news this season has been the opening of PopBrixton (www.popbrixton.org), where we are managing the green spaces, including a vast polytunnel cafe/dining room. We hope to supply as much produce as possible to the caterers, restaurants and cafes on site, and will be running workshops for the local community over the summer. The two large gardens at Southwark Charities almshouses are bursting with colour and buzzing with bees, giving us plenty of maintenance work for our graduates to develop their skills.
We have had a steady supply of people completing the course at Time and Talents, almost all of whom have stuck around in one form or another, which is exactly what we want – to build a community. Some are making terrariums for a commission we received with Kitchen Table Projects (www.kitchentableprojects.com). Others are recruiting local residents on Rotherhithe estates for our Saturday workshops. And some of the most ambitious are managing our gardens and taking on independent commissions with local schools and elderly residents who need some help to keep their patches looking their best. This work has been made possible by generous grants from The People’s Postcode Trust, the Trust for London, Southwark Council, Wakefield Tetley and Newcomen Collett Foundations.
And, lastly, it was this time last year that the company was created. That has given us a chance to look back at the progress we have made, the lives we have changed and the spaces we have transformed. Thank you to all our supporters and collaborators who have made it possible. Without you, none of it could happen.
