Thanks to our collaboration with British Land in Rotherhithe, we were invited to help in the final stages of creating the educational gardens at Netley Primary School. We hosted a team of corporate volunteers, who built raised beds, cleaned out the pond and mowed the lawns. Since then, we have taken over responsibility for these tasks ourselves, and have continued to host corporate teams there to do seasonal improvements. The site is an excellent learning opportunity for our trainees, with its large pond and woodland areas. We have kept the site in a state of ‘wild cultivation’ to encourage exploration and interaction with wildlife for the pupils. We also tend a miniature apple orchard there, and encourage the cultivation of wild fruit for foraging such as alpine strawberries. The pond has a significant population of dragon and damselflies, providing excellent curriculum-enrichment opportunities.
